Spanish Education for Women is an independent, non-profit educational organization which provides quality Spanish instruction to women who work with Latinos.

Who are we?

Forty families in a working-class neighborhood of Guadalajara who have opened their generous hearts and modest homes to SEW students since 1986.

Eighty young neighborhood women who tutor us in the afternoons, sharing stories, traditions and recipes.

Twelve talented professors who teach us verbs, vocabulary and much more on the lovely campus of ITESO, a nearby Jesuit university with a long-standing commitment to social justice.

Hundreds of friends and family in the US who generously donate to SEW every year.

Three founders committed to best practices of second-language teaching, a preferential option for the poor, a focus on women and social justice in the hemisphere. SEW's founders are Debbie Polhemus, a teacher of English Language Learners; Denise Curry, SND, a Special Education teacher; and Nancy Haines, a Physical Education teacher.
